I remember getting the script for this commercial and the casting director, Shasta Lutz was looking for someone who could speak really fast, ramble on while improvising, and who could be a disaster date. For the people who personally know me....I don't need to say much more!
The commercial was called "Blind Date" and it was shot to promote, "Science World" in Vancouver, which is equivalent to our science center in Toronto. There were several commercials similar to this one that were released at the same time, all based on random science facts.
It was only a six hour shoot, which is really short in the non-union world, but we did what seemed like a million different takes. The most exciting part for me was getting to improvise at the end of each take and whenever I got too crazy the director would just pull me back. We packed my purse with fun props like chains, stuffed toys, shoes etc, so I could pull them out and set them on the table while looking for his bill. We also did takes where I drank out of his glass, or fondled his lemon before using it in my water, but of course the funniest takes always end up on the cutting room floor. I figured they would be to risky for a place dedicated to children and families anyway.
In the summer of 2011, I got a really cool job doing promotional videos for Bounce. I will never forget the audition. I was asked to perform two improvised scenes, one where I was on a date at a restaurant and had brought my own bounce dryer sheets with me (I had to use them for something during the date) and the other was at a coffee shop, where my mission was to pay with the dryer sheets. Just for future reference, if you ever bring your dryer sheets to dinner with you and use them to wipe your mouth, you will get a rash around your lips (but you will certainly smell fresh)
I got the chance to shoot a Tim Horton's commercial last April with a great production house that goes by the name of, "Spy films". Shasta Lutz from Jigsaw was the casting director on this project and she also cast me in the "Blind Date" commercial for the Vancouver Science Center.
I recently shot a promo video for Telus. It was a "Wheel of Fortune" spoof for internal use. I played Vanna White in her early days of course with a gentleman named Ted Bisaillion, who played Pat Sajak. They changed our names to Matt and Hanna and put me in a bright, blonde wig (I now know I can never be a blonde) and a hideous, yet perfect purple gown. I gained an extra ten pounds worth of fake diamonds that day, which is always nice.
Sometimes it seems like there's not many comedy auditions out there, so when this project came along I was excited that it was in sketch comedy format. Each episode was only a few minutes in length and each actor had the opportunity to play several different characters, which is always good for an actor's demo reel.
